The Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ) and Open Access Australasia (OAA) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to strengthen trusted, equitable and sustainable open access journal publishing across Australasia.
The partnership reflects a shared commitment to advancing an open and equitable scholarly communication ecosystem and will focus on increasing the recognition, quality, visibility and long-term sustainability of open access journals, including Diamond open access and institutionally supported journals.
Through the collaboration, DOAJ and OAA will work together on advocacy, capacity building, and knowledge-sharing initiatives, supporting journals and institutions to meet recognised standards of quality, transparency, and research integrity. The organisations will also promote the value of open scholarly infrastructure and explore opportunities to strengthen sustainable national and regional Diamond open access publishing infrastructure across Australasia.

DOAJ Managing Director Joanna Ball says, “DOAJ has worked with OAA and the Australasian library community for many years, and I am delighted to formalise our collaboration. OAA plays an important role in connecting and supporting the open access community across the region, making it a natural and valuable partner for DOAJ. We are particularly looking forward to working together to support the growth and sustainability of diamond open access in Australasia.”
Program Manager at OAA Janet Catterall adds, “OAA is pleased to formalise this partnership with DOAJ. Trusted, community-governed open infrastructure is essential to an equitable scholarly communication system, and DOAJ plays a vital role in helping quality open access journals be discovered and recognised globally. Working together, we can strengthen capacity, visibility and long-term sustainability for the diverse journal publishing community across Australia and Aotearoa New Zealand, connecting regional activity to a wider global movement for equitable open publishing.”
