On the 12th May 2023, DOAJ officially turned 20 years old. To celebrate 20 years of being a key part of the open infrastructures, DOAJ at 20 was launched as a campaign throughout the year to connect to our community in various ways.

We hosted three events on the themes of Open, Global and Trusted. This is the first time DOAJ has hosted events, and we were extremely taken aback by the response from our community.

Across the three events, we had more than 1500 registrations from 105 countries.

All three events were free and open to everyone, and were recorded. You can watch the recordings of the DOAJ at 20: Open, DOAJ at 20: Global and DOAJ at 20: Trusted on our YouTube channel.

We want to send a special thanks to all our speakers and three moderators, who did a fantastic job to make all three events a great success:

Moderator: Abeni Wickham

Speakers: Lars Bjørnshauge, Mikael Laakso and Nadine D. Buckland.

Moderator: Ivonne Lujano

Speakers: Saurabh Khanna, Josie Caplehorne, Gimena del Rio Riande, Susan Murray, Ikhwan Arief, Gu Liping, Abel Packer and Vrushali Dadawante.

Moderator: Joy Owango

Speakers: Ivan Oransky, Ixchel M. Faniel, Dr Haseeb Irfanullah and Judith Barnsby.

In addition to these events, we launched a Paypal campaign where we asked our community for support to celebrate our 20th anniversary. The campaign will remain open and we welcome any donations, big or small, from our community.

Throughout 2023 we also released a series of Journal Stories where we interviewed journals that are indexed in DOAJ to get to know some of our journals and their stories a little better. You can read all these stories in our DOAJ Voices category on the blog.

We want to thank our community for helping us celebrate 20 years in 2023. We are extremely grateful for all the engagement, discussions, shares, likes, usage, support and time you’ve given DOAJ in 2023 – and the last 20 years. DOAJ would not exist without our wonderful community.
