At the start of December, the Dutch Research Council, De Nederlandse Organisatie voor Wetenschappelijk Onderzoek (NWO) agreed to support DOAJ for 3 years and thereby offer sustainable funding to allow us to continue the invaluable work we do.
Those of you who follow cOAlition S developments will know that NWO is a cOAlition S funder.
In a letter to DOAJ, Dr Jasper Reijnders, Head executive of the Board Office, wrote:
‘The Dutch Research Council NWO is deeply committed to Open Science. It has had an Open Access policy since 2009, followed by an open research data policy in 2016. NWO is member of cOAlition S and will introduce Plan S as from January 1 2021. NWO acknowledges the importance of Open Science infrastructures and wherever possible tries to contribute to the sustainable support and/or the development of essential open science infrastructures.
‘…I am happy to inform you that the board of NWO has decided to a three year support to the Directory of Open Access Journals…. NWO considers DOAJ to be an essential open access infrastructure. An important part of our open access policy refers to and is dependent on the quality assurance provided by DOAJ.’
NWO joins a small but growing group of funders who directly acknowledge the role that DOAJ plays with a sustaining contribution. We hope that other funders from around the world will follow suit.
Our thanks go to the NWO board!
