With less than a week until our final DOAJ at 20 event, we thought it would be great to get to know our moderator and speakers a little better!
We are extremely excited for this event, which has an incredible lineup of experts, each with their own sets of skills, knowledge and views. The DOAJ at 20: Trusted event on the 7th December will consist of a fireside chat style discussion followed by a Q&A.

So, who can you expect to see at the DOAJ at 20: Trusted event, and what are their backgrounds? Read on to find out!
Dominic Mitchell
Operations Manager at DOAJ, Dom Mitchell, will be opening the event with a short overview of the concept of trust and what it means to DOAJ. Dominic has over 25 years of experience working with publisher and library communities. He is responsible for operations and development of the DOAJ platform. He acts as Committee chair for the Think. Check. Submit. initiative, of which DOAJ is a founding organisation. He represents DOAJ in Project JASPER, a cross-industry project working to ensure that journals are preserved for the long term. He also sits on the OASPA Board of Directors and serves as Secretary. Outside of work, he is reluctantly becoming an expert in the playparks of Stockholm with his twin sons.
Moderator Joy Owango
Joy Owango Is an experienced award winning Founding Director of the Training Centre in Communication (TCC Africa) an award winning Trust registered in Kenya set up in 2006 and is the first African-based training centre to teach effective communication skills to scientists. TCC Africa is in partnership and housed at the University of Nairobi, Kenya and provides capacity support in improving African researchers output and visibility through in scholarly and science communication
Beyond this she has successfully created Global North –South collaborations, where the centre promotes Open Science dialogue and provides equitable access to open source research discovery solutions to African governments and their respective academic communities. Through these partnerships TCC Africa actively creates awareness through advocacy on Open Science in Africa.She currently sits on the Steering Committee of the Research Organization Registry and the International Science Council’s, Steering Group on the Project on the future of scientific publishing.
Ivan Oransky
Ivan Oransky, MD, is co-founder of Retraction Watch, editor in chief of Spectrum, and distinguished writer in residence at New York University’s Arthur Carter Journalism Institute. Ivan previously was president of the Association of Health Care Journalists and vice president of editorial at Medscape. He has also held editorial leadership positions at MedPage Today, Reuters Health, Scientific American and The Scientist. He is the recipient of the 2015 John P. McGovern Medal for excellence in biomedical communication from the American Medical Writers Association, and in 2017 was awarded an honorary doctorate in civil laws from The University of the South (Sewanee). In 2019, the judges for the John Maddox Prize, which promotes those who stand up for science in the face of hostility, gave him a commendation for his work at Retraction Watch.
Judith Barnsby
Judith is the Head of Editorial at DOAJ. She has 25 years of experience in the scholarly publishing industry, working for a range of non-profit society publishers and service providers before joining DOAJ. She has a keen interest in publishing standards and protocols, and has served on the board of CLOCKSS and as chair of the PALS (Publisher and Library Solutions) working group in the UK. Judith loves books, especially detective fiction, and volunteers in her local library.
Dr. Haseeb Irfanullah
Haseeb is an independent consultant in environment, climate change and research system, and a visiting research fellow at the University of Liberal Arts Bangladesh (ULAB), Dhaka. He is a biologist-turned-development facilitator, who often introduces himself as a research enthusiast. Over the past 24 years, Haseeb has worked for different international environment/development organizations, academic/research institutions, funders, and government agencies in different capacities. Currently, a Council Member of European Association of Science Editors (EASE), an associate editor of Learned Publishing, an associate at INASP, and a Chef of The Scholarly Kitchen, Haseeb advocates for sustainability, climate action, and resilience of scholarly publishing ecosystem. Haseeb has a PhD in aquatic ecology from the University of Liverpool, UK.
Ixchel M. Faniel
Ixchel M. Faniel, Ph.D., is a Senior Research Scientist at OCLC. She conducts user and library studies related to the discovery, access, evaluation, use, and reuse of content. Her current areas of interest include research data, open access publications, and information resources in an open web environment. Her research has been funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF), Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS), and National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH). Ixchel has a BS in Computer Science from Tufts University and an MBA and Ph.D. in Business Administration from University of Southern California, Marshall School of Business.
