{"id":7648,"date":"2026-02-23T04:11:29","date_gmt":"2026-02-23T04:11:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.doaj.org\/?p=7648"},"modified":"2026-02-23T04:50:01","modified_gmt":"2026-02-23T04:50:01","slug":"doaj-sustains-the-open-climate-campaigns-legacy-with-new-tagging","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.doaj.org\/es\/2026\/02\/23\/doaj-sustains-the-open-climate-campaigns-legacy-with-new-tagging\/","title":{"rendered":"DOAJ sustains the Open Climate Campaign&#8217;s legacy with new tagging"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><em><em>The Open Climate Campaign&#8217;s work on open access to climate research is being sustained by DOAJ&#8217;s new &#8220;open climate campaign&#8221; tagging, which creates an easily discoverable subject collection of over 7,000 relevant articles to make climate knowledge more accessible to all.<\/em><\/em><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The Open Climate Campaign<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To solve the world\u2019s greatest problems, knowledge about them must be open. This was the impetus for the <a href=\"https:\/\/openclimatecampaign.org\/\">Open Climate Campaign<\/a>, a partnership between <a href=\"https:\/\/creativecommons.org\/\">Creative Commons<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/sparcopen.org\/\">SPARC<\/a> y <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eifl.net\/\">EIFL<\/a> with funding from the <a href=\"https:\/\/arcadiafund.org.uk\/\">Arcadia Fund<\/a>. Initial data collected by the Campaign suggested that only half of the research papers assessed as climate change papers were openly available. This meant that if you were looking for information, be it a model or data for a recommendation on climate change, and you were not part of an institution with a subscription, the chances of accessing that knowledge came down to a coin toss. For example, Creative Commons continues to facilitate the opening and sharing of climate research via its <a href=\"https:\/\/creativecommons.org\/about\/open-science\/\">Open Science <\/a>work, and this includes datasets and data models. For the past two years, Creative Commons has been working with some of the world\u2019s largest data providers to openly license climate change data and provide metadata recommendations to facilitate interoperability and sharing:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote has-text-align-center is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><em>Collectively addressing climate change means that this climate data must be open, accessible, and easy to use, so more people everywhere can contribute collectively to solutions<\/em>. <\/p>\n<cite>Open Climate <a href=\"https:\/\/creativecommons.org\/about\/open-science\/open-climate\/\">https:\/\/creativecommons.org\/about\/open-science\/open-climate\/<\/a> <\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\"><strong>DOAJ and open climate tagging<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Recently, DOAJ has begun automatically tagging articles highlighted by the sunsetted Open Climate Campaign. In an article search, using the article keywords \u201copen climate campaign\u201d will locate more than 7,000 articles (as of February 2026).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"175\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.doaj.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/image-2-1024x175.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-7663\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.doaj.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/image-2-1024x175.png 1024w, https:\/\/blog.doaj.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/image-2-300x51.png 300w, https:\/\/blog.doaj.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/image-2-768x132.png 768w, https:\/\/blog.doaj.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/image-2-1536x263.png 1536w, https:\/\/blog.doaj.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/image-2-18x3.png 18w, https:\/\/blog.doaj.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/image-2.png 1600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Figure 1: DOAJ article keyword search &#8220;open climate campaign&#8221;<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>This enables DOAJ to highlight these articles as a subject collection on our website.&nbsp; Deputy Director Dominic Mitchell adds:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><em>\u201cWe have more than 11.8 million articles in DOAJ and apart from our search and browse features, we\u2019ve never had a way to create \u201csubject collections\u201d and highlight a subset of them in a way that is impactful for our community of users. Climate change is real and every step matters in mitigating irreversible impacts, such as ice-sheet collapse and major sea-level rise. I applaud DOAJ for their efforts to uncover open climate change research and calling everyone to reflect on their actions to increase openness.\u201d Iryna also outlines easy steps to make this research accessible: \u201cPublish climate and biodiversity research in open access journals; deposit in repositories and provide open access; make data, code and models open; develop and implement open science policies; create open educational resources and find ways to contribute.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Climate communication ultimately expands our understanding and awareness of climate change and libraries and library associations around the world are also actively involved in supporting the dissemination of climate research. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ifla.org\/\">IFLA<\/a> Policy and Advocacy Manager Claire McGuire explains:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe impact of climate change does not recognise borders. This is a challenge that affects everyone &#8211; everywhere &#8211; and requires bold solutions that fit local contexts while being informed by a global knowledge commons. IFLA strongly believes that comprehensive open access to scholarly literature and research documentation is vital for enhancing our understanding of the world, reducing information inequality, and strengthening our ability to solve global challenges.&nbsp;Initiatives, such as<strong> <\/strong>DOAJ\u2019s open climate tagging, can help ensure open climate change research is as impactful as possible.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>How to add or update metadata<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, how can publishers indexed in DOAJ add to or update their metadata to improve the discoverability of climate research?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Well, there are two ways: either when the article metadata is supplied to us, or retrospectively.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019re sending us new articles that are about climate change research, you can simply add the tag \u201copen climate campaign\u201d in the keywords field of the XML, JSON or metadata input form.
