{"id":1794,"date":"2017-11-09T11:44:04","date_gmt":"2017-11-09T10:44:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.doaj.org\/?p=1794"},"modified":"2025-08-22T02:41:44","modified_gmt":"2025-08-22T02:41:44","slug":"international-coalition-to-help-sustain-doaj-and-its-further-development-in-the-coming-years","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.doaj.org\/de\/2017\/11\/09\/international-coalition-to-help-sustain-doaj-and-its-further-development-in-the-coming-years\/","title":{"rendered":"International coalition to help sustain DOAJ and its further development in the coming years"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1803 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/doajournals.files.wordpress.com\/2017\/11\/scoss-1.png\" alt=\"scoss-1\" width=\"248\" height=\"147\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight:400\"><a href=\"http:\/\/scoss.org\/\">SCOSS (The Global Sustainability Coalition for Open Science Services)<\/a>\u00a0today <a href=\"https:\/\/sparceurope.org\/scoss\/#CURRENTAPPEAL\">announced<\/a> that major organizations have recom<\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400\">mended to their member institutions to support DOAJ\u00a0with funding that will enable DOAJ to move towards a new crowdfunding effort and away from its incremental annual contribution system. Under the new model organisations will work towards sustaining DOAJ for the coming 3 years, giving it more stability for the mid-term. This will enable DOAJ to develop a fully comprehensive, longer term development plan for its systems and services.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight:400\">For a decade the funding of DOAJ has been based on contributions from <a href=\"https:\/\/doaj.org\/members\">individual libraries, library consortia<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/doaj.org\/sponsors\">research funders<\/a> from many countries around the globe.\u00a0<\/span>We are extremely grateful for their continuous support and we are looking forward to welcoming many of them as contributors under the SCOSS initiative.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight:400\">These contributions have allowed DOAJ to develop step by step and thus become one the most important freely available resources for Open Access.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight:400\">As an initial step, DOAJ will introduce a governance structure that will allow for more active influence from the community on strategic directions for DOAJ.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight:400\">The new <a href=\"https:\/\/sparceurope.org\/scoss\/#CURRENTAPPEAL\">SCOSS funding drive<\/a> will enable DOAJ to:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight:400\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">Engage in strategic longer term development of the services and systems behind our operations.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight:400\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">Provide adequate resource to cover the large number of applications coming in to DOAJ (currently 500+ per month).<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight:400\">Actively curate its list thereby keeping the index more up to date and relevant.<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight:400\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">Enable publishers to update their own journal information, keeping records relevant.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight:400\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">Continue efforts to assess and include journals from the <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.doaj.org\/de\/2016\/03\/22\/idrc-grant-to-improve-oa-journals-from-the-global-south\/\">Global South<\/a> to make DOAJ even more comprehensive on a global scale.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight:400\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">Continue our advocacy work directed at influencing decision makers to support a transition to open access for local language journals.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight:400\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">Implement functionality that will allow DOAJ to actively harvest article-level metadata from the 10,000 journals that are currently indexed.
